The term Chow mein and Momos is not new to today's generation.
Whether it is children or older, for everyone today,
the party outside the house means chow mein and Momo itself.
Chinese food has made its own market in the last 10-15 years
in Doon. Here its a big business. Actress Durgapal is also a
big fan of Chow mein and Momos of Doon.
Even today Roop remembers Momos of Doon
When I came from Almora to Dehradun to do B.Tech,
it was the first time that I had the chance to eat Chinese food.
After this, the taste of chow mein and Momos of Doon got on the
tongue so that I became addicted to it. The TV actress
says while doing B.Tech., there was hardly a day when she didn't eat
chow mein and Momos. I remember that we used to go from Clementown almost daily
to eat Momos of Joshi and chow mein of Kumar Sweets near Ghanta Ghar.I spent about three years in Doon. After that I went to Mumbai and
roamed all the parts of the country, but what is in the Momos here,
I did not see me anywhere. In Mumbai, I miss it a lot.
Brought Mutton Momos for the first time in Doon
There are all varieties of Momos in Doon. Joshi fast food owner
Praveen Joshi explains that in 1987, he opened a shop named Joshi
Fast Food near the old bus station in Doon. He claims that he brought
Mutton Momo for the first time in Doon. He says that there is a lot of
demand for Mutton Momo, Chicken Momo, Veg chow mein, Mutton, Chicken
and Vege Thoppa.
Variety of chow mein in Doon
Indian Chinese Cuisine: In Indian Chinese cuisine, chow mein can be
found only in quite a few cases. It is also called the Chinese
cuisine of Kolkata. It is usually served with gravy. In it is added,
cauliflower, bamboo shoots, pods, green masala and carrots with
noodles.
American-Chinese Cuisine: In American-Chinese diet, this is a Stir
Fried Dish. These Noodles are prepared from meats, onions and celery.
Apart from this, you can easily find steamed chow mein, Crispy chow mein,
Canadian Chinese cuisine, Caribbean Chinese cuisine, Nepalese Chinese
cuisine in some restaurants.
Chow mein and Momos came to Doon from China
The words 'chow mein' came into being in the beginning of the 20th century.
The 'chow mein', which is eaten by light frying, is actually a Chinese dish.
That is why it is also called Chinese noodles. Its name has been taken from
the city of Taishan in China. In the early 1920's, the name of chow mein was
found in Sinclair Lewis novel 'Main Street'.However, Momo means 'Bread or
Chapati cooked in steam'. Momo is known by many names. Mostly it is called
Momos, many places are called Dimasim or Momo. There is a considerable number
of Tibetans in Doon. It is believed that when Tibetan came, the Chinese dish
also came along, and gradually the people also went crazy here.
